Why Meyers Advising?

The college admissions process can, and often does, seem and feel daunting; it is, therefore, appropriate to seek out an expert with whom you can partner to help support and guide your child through this wholeheartedly American rite of passage. You want Darren Meyers at your child’s side. Students he has worked with have gone on to enroll at a broad range of colleges and universities including Colleges That Change Lives and The Ivy League.

The purpose of the initial consultation is to establish rapport and lay the foundation for meaningful and important relationships. By getting to know your child, their likes and dislikes, their work habits, and more importantly how they see themselves at this moment and whom they hope to become in the future, Darren will help your child better understand themselves and what they want out of their college experience. But Darren will be there for you too, to answer whatever questions you may have about this critical time in your and your child’s lives.

Darren will advise you and your child on…

  • A developmentally appropriate timeline regarding standardized testing—the ACT, and the SAT—and whether or not it is advisable to retake a particular exam. Please note that Meyers Advising, LLC does not offer any test-prep of any kind.

  • Asking for recommendation letters from teachers, coaches, and other important adults.

  • When and how to research colleges and universities to assess whether or not they will be an appropriate match.

  • When, where, and how to get the very most out of a campus visit.

  • How to best approach an interview.

  • What a well-balanced list is and why it is critically important to a successful college process.

  • Whether Early Decision, Early Decision II, or Early Action is appropriate.

  • How to navigate and complete the Common Application.

  • What it means to be deferred or waitlisted, and what the appropriate response is.

Should you choose to also purchase the Essay & Supplement Package, Darren will work with your child and guide them through the writing of their main Common Application essay as well as any Supplements that are required by the colleges they are applying to. The E&S package includes editing feedback and support for up to seven drafts of each piece of writing.

Lastly, it is worth noting that it is critically important that your child maintains a very strong relationship with their school-based guidance or college counselor. It is they who will write your child’s counselor recommendation and communicate with the colleges on your child's behalf. While Darren does not replace your child’s school-based counselor, your child will be best served when he and they work collaboratively in support of your child.
